“What is a setup, anyway?”
When a musical instrument is built, it is set up to be playable (usually), but not specifically “dialed in” to the needs of the unique individual that it belongs to (that means YOU ).
When you have an instrument for some time, normal play wear as well as the wear and tear of gigs/lessons/practice takes its toll on your instrument (what do you mean? You’re not delicate with your stuff?).
A setup is a top to bottom check up for your instrument as well as adjusting it to your individual needs. The intonation is set(via. string length) so that your instrument plays in tune all the way up the neck. Frets are checked for level and polished, any trouble spots will be given special attention. Nut height and slot width are checked and adjusted if needed. Fingerboard is conditioned to improve playability and prevent splitting and shrinking. Neck relief is checked and adjusted
ALL electronics are tested, ALL contacts are cleaned, ALL solder joints checked and repaired if necessary . pickup height is adjusted to ensure optimal performance.
String height is set for comfortable play.
Tremolo bridges are balanced
All moving parts are lubricated and checked.
All bracing on acoustics are checked.
Everything else is cleaned and polished.
A new set of strings is then put on, tuned up and tested.
